Petya became a flat orphan after his mother’s death and was sent apprentice to Bekker, a circus man of muscle and a cruel and unfair person. Clown Edwards sympathized and loved the boy and secretly taught him real circus skills. But once the boy was frightened by the shouts of Bekker during the performance and fell down to his death.

In the early 1900s, a wrestler and a clown looking for a job are hired in Odessa circus. The two friends soon become world-famous separately until their reunion, many years later, in Paris.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Rossiter is wanted by the police because he gives a new face to criminals on the loose.
