Karel Cernik is a Czech circus owner. When Communists come to power, circus life is completely upset. The little troupe is not free to move anymore, everyone is asked to show his support to the government… Cernik decides to smuggle his circus out to the West.

Gaston’s vocation is to be a clown and he loves a pretty circus rider, but his stern bookkeeper father does not think much of the way his son is heading. Even after he dies, he goes on keeping a close eye on his offspring from above!

11-year-old orphan Toby Tyler lives with his uncle and aunt in dire poverty. Convinced he is not welcomed, he manages to be hired in a traveling circus as a candy vendor. There he discovers the world of street artists and befriends handyman Ben, clown Sam and Sam’s monkey Mr. Stubbs. After the bareback rider’s fall, Toby must replace him and with his friends Ben, Sam, Mr. Stubb and Jeanette’s help, he soon becomes a star rider who wows the crowd.
