Loose sequel to Artists in the Big Top: Perplexed. It continues the story of circus owner Leni Peickert as she returns to the Big Top after being expelled from the world of broadcast television. The circus in winter. Desperate times.

While adapting to her new life, she finds herself challenged, and in the end, happy with it.

A circus owner attempts to capture a mysterious Bunyip, but Dot and her bushland friends try to foil his plans. Dot soon discovers that the circus is merely a front for an international wildlife smuggling operation. Backed by her pals, Burra the Kookaburra and two boxing kangaroos, Dot goes on the warpath.

The film traces Phineas Taylor Barnum’s career from 1835 to 1881 when he joined James A. Bailey to form the famous ‘Greatest Show on Earth’.

The film takes place in Sri Lanka. In the story, the Moslem-Buddhist civil war has driven a local boy to hide out in a traveling circus which his white mother helps run. The fantastic nature of this story is borne out by the condition of the boy's mother, who survived the Nazi death camps and yet, in the 1980s, looks like a young woman. Despite the fragile refuge offered by the circus, the civil war begins to affect the performers’ lives.

Michaela Destrez receives a promising job offer abroad - but when she meets circus manager Martin Kier she falls under the spell of life in the Big Top, and decides to train as a circus rider. Martin stretches Michaela's abilities to the limit during the training sessions, however, and the circus employees regard her as an unwelcome intruder. Isabella, who is an excellent rider and is also suffering from unrequited love for Martin, is particularly jealous of Michaela. Very soon, however, Michaela becomes the star of the circus, and Martin's wife.
